Path to Siva Commentary, What Is Meditation?

What Is Meditation? Path to Siva Commentary, Lesson 46

Meditation is the study of awareness, of yourself and of the universe, experiencing the soul. The purpose of meditation is to separate awareness from what it is aware of, to separate awareness from consciousness. You will be able to live in the eternal now. Utilize the shumif perspective and acquire the tools to flow awareness from one state of consciousness to another.

Path to Siva, Lesson 46

Master Course Trilogy, Merging with Siva, Lesson 34.

Shumif Perspective: “One of four perspectives, the meditative viewpoint of being awareness flowing from one area of the inner mind to another, the mind itself being stationary. In Saiva Siddhanta, it includes the deeper meditative practices. It is an advaitic or monistic viewpoint.”

Gurudeva stresses the importance of cultivating devotion to Siva incorporating the yamas and the niyamas, performing atmartha puja. Through meditation and devotion, step outside of ahamkara (ego). What Is Meditation?

Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami reads from Lesson 46 of the Himalayan Academy publication “Path To Siva,” discussing the fine art of meditation.

The Art of Listening – Publisher’s Desk

Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami reads an older editorial from the July/August/September 2015 edition of Hinduism Today magazine. “With the modern distraction of digital media, we must be more mindful than ever of person-to-person communications. Sound is regarded as divine in Hinduism, so it is fitting that listening has always held a central role in the faith. Our core scriptures, the Vedas and Agamas, are referred to as shruti, which means “that which is heard,” as they were originally heard by rishis as an aural transmission directly from God. In the early days of human civilization, prior even to writing, shruti was faithfully preserved without alteration (important because this is the word of God) by means of aural instruction from guru to shishya. This went on generation after generation for thousands of years. Considering the vast body of texts, it is remarkable that this was achieved, and more remarkable still when you know it was accomplished by requiring students to learn each verse in eleven different ways, including backwards.”

Achieving Affectionate Detachment

Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami reads his upcoming editorial from the Jul/Aug/Sep 2018 edition of Hinduism Today magazine. “That completes the process of achieving affectionate detachment. We start with unaffectionate attachment and then move to unaffectionate detachment. From there we move to affectionate detachment, which comes in two stages. The first stage is expressing more love and kindness towards others. The second stage is understanding others more clearly, cognizing the nature of family, friends and acquaintances in an intuitive way, from the inside out, and therefore loving them more and being able to get along with them better. The deeper truth is that we are learning about ourself the whole time, and our inner changes are reflected in our relationships.”

Satguru’s Europe Visit Highlights

Here are some beautiful photos showcasing Satguru's trip to London.

Ramai Santhirapala reports:
"The 2018 London visit arose from an invitation for Satguru Bodhinatha to attend the 19th Saiva
Conference as a guest of honour. This is an annual two day conference hosted by the Federation of
Saiva (Hindu) Temples U.K; an organisation formed in 1988 to guide and counsel the Saivite temples
in the UK. The conference provides a forum for the UK Saivite community to come together and learn
about aspects of Saivism, and for the temples to exchange views and experiences alongside
challenges. One point of discussion seems to recur from the 1st to the 19th Saiva Conference - how
do youth who have grown up in the West remain close to the Saiva fold. As such a parallel youth
session has evolved at the conference, in English, which Satguru Bodhinatha was requested to lead
alongside delivering a plenary talk on both days of the conference to the UK Saivite community of
temple trustees, sivacharyas and devotees. Alongside Satguru Bodhinatha, the other guest was Srilasri
Somasundara Swamigal of Nallai Aadheenam whom Satguru met most recently during the February
2018 Himalayan Academy innersearch to Sri Lanka."

"Satguru received much praise in talks given by senior members of the UK Saivite community alongside
Srilasri Somasundara Swamigal for the dynamic work done by Kauai Aadheenam in affirming Saiva
Siddhantha and the uniqueness of the blend of traditional Saivite worship at the Aadheenam whilst
also producing what was described as the highest quality and authentic resources for Saivites to
connect with their faith - both for young and young at heart. The link of the lineage with Paramaguru
Siva Yogaswami was recurrently lovingly quoted."

"Satguru generously led a youth parallel session, in English, based on the Himalayan Academy
publication'Path to Siva' towards the culmination of the conference. This comprised a three hour
workshop which was packed to capacity as it progressed with a blend of young children to senior
elders - it seems the whole spectrum of the Saivite community are keen to learn! Satguru
Bodhinatha's presentation blended a fine balance of being comprehensive whilst detailed - a rare
skill. It went through esoterics of Hinduism and the Saivite Path alongside practical wisdom on
applying it to daily dynamic life in the West."
