A Happy Jayanti to Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami!

Tomorrow the monks enter their two day retreat which will begin with the celebration of Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami’s 78th Jayanti! Tomorrow evening our monks will be making a special meal (and cake!) for Satguru to enjoy together. Jai Gurunathan! Aum Namah Sivaya.

The Satguru
Who is he? Where might he be?
We do not honor a person or touch a pair of feet.
The guru is not someone you can speak to,
nor he, can anybody meet.
When the body passes from motions into earth,
the guru remains to stoke the hearth.
For he is not bound to the human form,
he does not need to go here or there.
He is in you and through you. He pervades everywhere.

The guru is the feeling you can no longer feel,
for you have become him and the aadheenam,
having abandoned the seemingly real.
When you feel uncomfortable and slightly off balance,
that is his presence, his darshan, doing its work.
It pierces your comforts and filters your murk.
Up through the wheels it brings you, spinning one after ‘nother,
pushing you beyond the borders of light until there is no other.

Being in the circumference of the guru’s circle, brings you gifts beyond measure,
as you melt away and become a rare human treasure.
You’ll boil and cook in a tapasvin’s cage—bars built by your vows and sadhana,
they should only strengthen with age.
Satguru will do the fashioning of the molten gold you’ve become.
He’ll rearrange particle by particle until he and you are one.
With synapses in sync to the inner core,
this great spirit will enter the soul and shatter the final door.
A gateway forever open, a finale that never ends.
And to think you so much as cringe when your will, he bends.

To feel that your guru could ever leave you, could ever depart,
is a shameful misunderstanding, for he is in your heart.
The guru’s not an individual as he’d have you believe,
he’s the spirit within you, ever abiding and easy to retrieve.
If you find your mind arguing, you’ve lost your sight,
if you want to change him, you’ve lost your might.
If you think you are you, you’ve made a mistake,
if you remain disobedient, he’ll remind you what’s fake.

He’ll bloom the flowers inside your spine,
he’ll rupture the pressures time after time.
He’ll let you fail again and again,
he’ll let your ego grow big as you grasp within.
He’ll let you go through what you must,
for it’s not this you, but your soul, that he trusts.
The human life is an experience, it is simply that,
passing frames of pain and pleasure which you knowingly enact.
Again and again you spin your rounds,
again and again new karma abounds.
You walk and talk and eat and sleep,
you strategize and feud, and acquire your heap.
Trinkets and spaces to call your own,
believing in many things, and sometimes only what’s shown.

All this time spent in human delusion,
a necessary part of your grand evolution.
And that’s what brought you, here, to his feet.
He offers you a form and a person to greet.
But you know, as does he, who he and you really are,
just twinkles in space and time, alluding to a distant star.
A star that dances through what is and is not,
a Being with anklets from which galaxies are wrought.
A truth so vast that no person can comprehend,
a reality so enrapturing it’s hard to remember that it’s all pretend.

For this he only asks that you do your best,
that you never stop trying, that you eventually pass every test.
Fail as much as you need to finally get it right,
bow your head deeper each time, and don’t bemoan your inner plight.
Take time to stop and rest from your buzzing activity,
he reminds us to be still and view the inner being’s vast intricacy.
To breath, to be, to observe a simple mind.
…To be kind.

So with all that said,
you’re here to honor an outer form of that which sets us all free,
here to thank the dancer for entering the life of you,
the life of me, and or course he—your Guruji.
As souls, individuals, we’ve wound threads of karma,
after lifetimes together we are bound to fulfill this dharma.
When unbound we float away, through deeper spaces,
to greet each other again, in crystal-light places.
Each of us a single thread in a great tapestry,
a shining example of the one-and-only guru’s exquisite mastery.

Happy Jayanti Bodhinatha!

Bodhinatha

Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami reads and comments on a series of talks which Gurudeva gave in the 1970s. The talks have been compiled into a book, called The Seven Dimensions of the Mind. Bodhinatha starts out with the seventh dimension, goes through Part 1 and 2, then the sixth dimension. This is a rare look at the universe, both physical and subtle, deepening our understanding of the mind.
