Bodhinatha in Michigan

Bodhinatha is in Michigan today. He said the Hindu Temple Council of North America meeting he attended was fruitful. One of the main initiatives was a focus on input to the government on a proposed revision to the qualifications for the temporary religious worker visa. While Hindu temples need to be able to sponsor visas for priests and artisans coming to the U.S. from overseas, it’s important that the Hindu religious needs continue to be fairly encompassed in the revised law. A delegation of three will be going to Washington D.C. to meet with a committee from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services which has called for input on the proposed revisions to the law.

Paramacharya Palaniswami and Yogi Jivanandanatha have sent us a movie and slideshow.

Today’s Visitors

A very quiet morning following a series of overnight storms which struck the Islands.

Darcy Lubbers brought her students from Santa Monica, CA. They are on a spiritual retreat on Kauai and are studying Ayurveda. Amongst the group are nursing professionals who wish to expand their knowledge into the Eastern forms of healing.

Mr. P. Balachandran with a friend from British Columbia, Canada, originally Kerala, India. He is very knowledgeable about temple architecture and Saivism and is a longtime subscriber to Hinduism Today.

On left, Aaron and his mother Charmaine Pesnell who reside in Anahola, Kauai. P Balachandran and friend from Canada, Sally Tygart from Florida, Surendra and Karen Gupta from CA., Ravindra and Meera Vashi from CT, and Laurie Laney from Florida.

Surendra full of enthusiasm remarked “what an unexpected blessing to be here now to see this great Temple being built. It is truly wonderful!”

Visiting from Bangalore are Deepa, and her two children Venkat (5) and Sahana (3). Beside them are Ranjani and Srikanth with their 10 month old daughter, Samanvitha, from Fremont, CA.

Tamil-speaking they were able to learn a great deal about the temple building from the silpis themselves. Upon returning from his trip to the Iraivan Temple, Srikanth’s only remark was “Its just Fabulous!”

The marvels of Skype! Our team had an international video chat with Palaniswami and Yogi today in Chennai. The quality of the video was amazing.

They are both doing very well and have three more days in Chennai before flying off to Mauritius.

Yogi Jivanandanatha thought it was interesting to note that if you started drilling through the earth from Hawaii you would end up on Botswana, which is just a stone’s throw from our Spiritual Park in Mauritius. You can see Mauritius there on the map, its the tiny dot on the right, just off the coast of the big island, which is Madagascar. Kauai Aadheenam and the Spiritual Park together have the world surrounded.

Our Spiritual Park and Monastery on the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean

This month our MC Gathering was at uncle Egambrum’s residence at Flacq, our most senior enrolled MC student. Uncle is a retired Tamil language school inspector. He welcomed us with a nice shrine for that day…

On the wall of the parlor is a large Ganesha beautiful painting inspiring everyone ….

The activity starts with a simple arati by the host.

Today the lessons are on Ashtanga Yoga: fifth to eighth limb: Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi.. Satguru Bodhinatha explains on Dharana:

“The first part of the practice is to feel your nerve system, all those thousands of miles of nerve current throughout the body and the psychic nerve system surrounding the body. Feel energy flowing through this vast network. Once this is well established more on to the second part. The second part is on the out-breath visualize this energy withdrawing from the nerve system into the spine. Of course in coming out of meditation we repeat this process in reverse.”

A long practical session learning and practising concentration on a flower followed by a guided Shum meditation.

The students during the coffee break are pondering about what they have just learned from Satguru Bodhinatha

“Meditation and concentration are practically the same thing, though meditation is simply a more intense state of concentration. The state of meditation is careful, close scrutiny of the individual elements and energies which make up that flower. You are scrutinizing the inner layers of the mind, of how a flower grows, how the seed is formed. You are observing it so keenly that you have forgotten that you are a physical body, that you are an emotional unit, that you are breathing. You are in the area of mind where that flower exists, and the bush that it came from, and the roots and the seed and all phases of manifestation, all at the same time. And you are seeing it as it actually is in that area of the mind, where the flower is that you first put awareness at attention upon, then began to concentrate upon. Then you are meditating on the actual inner area of the mind where, in all stages of manifestation, that particular species actually is within the mind.”

The session continued.. The reading of a chapter from Merging with Siva on ‘Observation’ as explained by Gurudeva.

Explanation continued on Bodhinatha’s talk:
“Example of the first level of Samadhi or contemplation: Continuing with our example of the flower contemplation is concentrating so deeply in the inner areas of the mind in which that flower and the species of it and the seed of it and all exist. We go deeper, deeper, deeper within, into the energy and the life within the cells of the flower, and we find that the energy and the life within the cells of the flower is the same as the energy within us, and we are in contemplation upon energy itself. We see the energy as light. We might see the light within our head, if we have a slight body consciousness. In a state of contemplation, we might not even be conscious of light itself, for you are only conscious of light if you have a slight consciousness of darkness. Otherwise, it is just your natural state, and you are in a deep reverie. In a state of contemplation, you are so intently alive, you can’t move. That’s why you sit so quietly.”

The sessions over, all participants shared a lunch together …

Kirtideva and Nuckiren from Quatre Bornes

Uncle Egambrum and Amma lovingly spoilt all of us at their residence…. Both of them have taught us a great lesson on humility… the Hindu way.

Selven Maurimootoo is one of those few students from the far south of the island. He is dedicated to his level one study of the Master Course.

Should you wish to be emailed a copy of Bodhinatha’s talk for that session, kindly click and send your request to: spark@hindu.org

Here is Bodhinatha in Malaysia on the last Innersearch. You can join him there again in the coming 2008 Innersearch

Audio Notice Bodhinatha’s talk on Sun One has been posted… Don’t miss it!

At home it is a very quiet day as the visitor traffic seems to have finally abated somewhat after spring break is over and families are back to work and kids are back to school.

The Pillaiyar Kulam gave their news today. Shanmuganathaswami continues to work with different Hindu Heritage Endowments and the new India distribution web site.

Muruganathaswami notes rising sales of
What is Hinduism
. He is also continuing in the process of sending out copies for review. He also shared with us some big news about a major change in US postal rates classifications and rates for both international and national mail. It is causing quite a ripple in through the publications industry as everyone is scrambling to update their web sites, postage meters, shipping cost projects etc.

Some photos from yesterday afternoon. Bodhinatha and Adinatha departing for Flint, Michigan.

It was a long night flight and today, Friday, they had the morning off to rest and then meetings the rest of the day.

Paramacharya Palaniswami and Yogi Jivananandanatha have been through a world wind of activities with a flight from Delhi to Bangalore, packed with activities in Bangalore and then on to Chennai. Palaniswami managed to send us a slide show amidst his busy schedule.

What Happened Today at the Monastery?

Bodhinatha departed today at 12 noon for Flint Michigan where he will attend a meeting of the Hindu Council of North American Temples and also have satsang with different devotees in the area and also speak at the Chinmaya Mission there. He will be back on Monday.

It was tour day today and it is wonderful to see the many Hindu families who visit the temple these days.

Here is Savitha and Ashok Sudarsanam with their two children, Vinay age 3 and Yasmin 4 months – (Yasmin was a little camera shy.) The Sudarsanam family are from San Francisco and attend both the Livermore and Fremont temples.

Rajesh and Alica Patel from Kansas with their friends Smita and Kamlesh from New Mexico all came for the tour today followed by a trip to the rudraksha forest.

Sadhaka Dandapani is an expert tour guide with a great sense of humor. Here he is with the second tour group of the day. Sadhaka Dandapani explains the history of the Iraivan Temple and answers the many questions from non-Hindus and Hindus alike.

In front of the main entrance of the Iraivan Temple, with Sadhaka Dandapani, a smiling group of happy souls pose for a photo before making their way back home.

A group of multi-national friends arrived for Tour Day. Here is Dawna Sumaria from Kapaa, who first met Gurudeva in 1987, Petra Sundheim from Kalaheo, Lisa Raphael from Florida, Carmelle Desrosiers and Ariana Sheran from Canada and Robert Zauner from Denmark, now Kapaa. Dawna related some brief meetings she had with Gurudeva and felt that “there are no words to describe the greatness of that Great Soul!”

Another wonderful family from Karur, Tamil Nadu. Lakshmi Narasimhan Munugoor, his wife Selvapriya Ranganathan, their 8 yr old son Vedevyas and baby Bharadwaj 1 yr old.

Posing with the “Super Silpis” Pandi, Manikandan, Rajendran and Chelliah.

“Just a Beautiful Temple!” said Lakshmi.

Tihoti Tatau is from Tahiti and is a spiritual teacher there. He’s visiting the island for the first time and his friends decided to show him the monastery as he also does stone carving.

What Happened Today at the Monastery?

Sun One Today begins a bright new six-day phase. Bodhinatha gave an excellent talk on shum today.

We bring you also a slide show and video from Paramacharya Palaniswami and Yogi Jivanandanatha today.

If you have difficulty seeing the video in the frame on this page click this link to open the movie in a new window.

Prayers to the devas go into the homa and manifest in the astral world.

We bring you a series of the accoutrements of the homa.

Rudraksha wood

Ganapati

Varuna kumbha

Bell from Bali with a very distinct, clear tone

Sri Hanuman

Ghee offering spoons

Various sacred plants, spices and woods to be offered

Nine grains

In his talk, Bodhinatha elucidated two key Shum concepts: bihaiishum (contentment) and nalif (continuity of superconsciousness between meditations) which will be coming to you later this phase.

Silpis coming forward for blessings

Visitor news:

Sunil and Minu Shukla are on pilgrimage from Ann Arbor Michigan. Sunil’s parents were here last year and encouraged them to come. Sunil is an electrical engineer and Minu paints sacred art. She creates granite images of Lord Ganesha and other deities in her oil paintings.

They were thrilled to see the Iraivan Temple and expressed that this was the fulfillment of a dream.

In a sacred and tranquil setting. The beautiful white and pink lotus flowers open fully in the morning sun.

Before their departure, Sunil and Minu received the additional blessing of meeting with H.H. Bodhinatha Veylan Swami. They found to their delight that our beloved Guru will be visiting Flint, Michigan toward the end of April where their entire family can be present for the ceremony honoring His Holiness for the profound work he and the Aadheenam are performing for the entire Hindu World.

A wonderful Spiritual oasis!

A meditative and peaceful abode where pilgrims may perform their own abhishekam in worship and devotion to Siva beside a mountain stream as it spills into the lotus pond.

“Iraivan” is an ancient Dravidian Tamil name for God Siva.

This beautiful temple is in a very peaceful setting surrounded by acres of rich verdant, tropical, botanical gardens, waterfalls and lotus ponds.

Visitors from Bali and India came throughout the day today. The first visitors arrived early, attended the morning puja, and were then taken to the Iraivan Temple. The Balinese are noted for their devotion and love of God Siva. The energy in the temple was very high which caused Sadhaka Satyanatha to observe that the Balinese devas meeting our temple devas might have something to do with it.

Our visitors lauded the silpis for their magnificent work.

Himalayan Acres News

Each retreat on Siddhidata Day the monks all work on physical projects. One of these is a regular trip to Himalayan Acres, our land on the other side of the Wailua River dedicated to diversified agriculture projects. Here we see that the new noni field is doing very well.

It is a very peaceful, wide open expanse with mountains in the distance. Our parcel is 407 acres.

A small structure is being raised to protect our large farm equipment from the elements.

Sannyasin Arumugaswami manages the development of the land. Today he has Yogi Japendranatha and Sadhaka Satyanatha with him.

This lightweight frame is actually hurricane proof.

There are some really serious anchors digging deep into the ground and attached to the frame with chains and turnbuckles.

A hurricane might remove the tent covering, but this frame is here to stay.

What Happened Today at the Monastery?

Today was Sun Five and the Ganapati Kulam gave their report. The team is 100% focused on finishing the July issue of Hinduism Today.

Meanwhile Paramacharya Palaniswami and Yogi Jivanandanatha are in regular communication via Skype, including movies by e-mail.

~~~~~~~~~~~
END OF PHASE
Today is the last day of our phase.
This edition of TAKA will remain posted
over our coming two-day retreat,
until Navami Tithi, Sun One, Wednesday, April 25th.
Another beautiful day!
Here is a large perfectly exquisite pure white anthurium nestled on the hillside near the lotus ponds.
Many of the rare plants at Kauai Aadheenam are from Sri Dhar’s collection (see the slide show for information)
Palaniswami writes: “In 1995 Gurudeva and Palaniswami visited the home of one of India’s leading industrialists, Shri Dhar. In the following years, Shri Dhar began to trade plants with the monastery. This was the first time Palaniswami visited one of Shri Dhar’s several private gardens, guided personally by him and his wife, Pathma. Yogi Jivanandanatha took this brief video as we began the tour in the devastating summer heat.”
If you have difficulty viewing the video in the frame on this page click this link to open the movie in a new window.
Dr. Cristina Plettner is here enjoying the peacefulness and tranquility of the Temple and Aadheenam gardens before returning to her work at IBM. Cristina is a nuclear physicist and is originally from Romania. “I have never experienced such a heavenly place. Its beautiful beyond words” Cristina said as she reluctantly departed.
On the right are six shrines honoring six of the great satgurus of our 163-guru lineage all the way back to Maharishi Nandinatha from the Himalayas and beyond.
The peace and beauty of Rishi Valley Lake.
Left: the shrine honoring Siva Yogaswami (1872-1964), great rishi of Jaffna, Northern Sri Lanka. Right: the shrine honoring our own beloved satguru, great world teacher and shining light to the world, Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, Gurudeva (1927-2001).
And through the trees at the top of the hill one can see the golden capstone of Iraivan Temple–Gurudeva’s vision manifesting in all its glory.
Sheltered by Australian ferns and encircled by Hawaiian cactus is a beautiful grove of white anthuriums.
With the beautiful Iraivan Temple in the background here are Sadhaka Satyanatha, Becky Jessee and Yogi Japendranatha.
Becky and her son, Brahmachari Chandran, pose for one last photo before her departure back to her home in Reno, Nevada, tomorrow. She has enjoyed a week here visiting Chandran who is performing a six-month Task Force volunteer service at the Aadheenam. Chandran is very interested in monastic life.
What Happened Today at the Monastery?
Here is Bodhinatha giving out his teachings using Apple’s Keynote program. It’s similar to Power Point. And note on the right side bar that the talk he gave on sun 1 of this phase has been posted. (Sorry for the sound quality… some small technical glitches in the audio recording system, which we are solving….)
Meanwhile at the Aadheenam it was a spectacularly beautiful spring day.
Below we have a short set of slides from Paramacharya Palaniswami in New Delhi.
Kulapati Vel and Kulamata Valli Alahan, long-time devotees of Gurudeva and Bodhinatha, are visiting from the Mainland. They were about to enter the Kadavul Siva Temple for the Ardra Abhishekam when this photo was taken in front of the exquisite wood-carving of Kartikeya that adorns the outer wall of the temple. It was commissioned for Kadavul from a craft company in India and installed by Adi Alahan during his last visit, along with the Ganesha in the next photo.
Vijaya and Ram Gunturi from Dallas attended the Sun One homa and today the Ardra abhishekam before returning home. Ram is with Texas Instruments Corp.
“Its so very spiritual and beautiful here; we will be back.” Vijaya said wistfully.
Bala Srinivasan arrived with his family Tara and Annapurna from San Jose, CA. They remained at the Kadavul Temple while he went out for a tour of the Iraivan Temple. “Oh, what a wonderful experience this is! What an unbelievably beautiful temple!” remarked Bala.
This morning Hindu families and visitors were escorted to Iraivan Temple for a tour.
(far left) Raghu Garikapaty and Brindavani Garikapaty from Glendale, AZ. Brindavani is an accomplished Bharathanatyam dancer and Carnatic music teacher. “We are moved by the peace and tranquility here. This is definitely a heaven on earth” she said.
(center/right) Parthasarathy and Hema Rajagopalan from Oakbrook, IL, are longtime subscribers to Hinduism Today. They said they thoroughly enjoyed visiting both temples today and “wish we had come sooner.”
(Center/left) Dr. Mailvaganam Mahendran and wife Mallika, originally from Jaffna, Sri Lanka, where Mailvaganam remembers St. Yogaswami and knew Johar Swami very well. They now reside in Ontario, Canada.
Next to them are Michelle and Turpin Mott from Kirkland WA. They are here on vacation and are soon to be the happy adoptive parents of a baby girl!
What a glorious spring day!
Today, Sun Four, the Siddhidata Kulam gave their news. They also provided the following series of photos.
One of their tasks recently was preparing and installing this new copper Aum in the base of the Nepalese Ganesha shrine today.
The vanilla bean is vine flowering for the first time.
A small bud is about to open.
Anna Purna Gardens is the source of much of the monastery’s food. The Siddhidata Kulam puts a lot of time working here.
Ganesha overseeing the nursery and garden
Pole beans in foreground and sweet potatoes behind .
The tall shrub in the background is a perennial edible green called Pakwan
A new pumpkin plant just coming up.
Cabbages with Marigold flowers.
Close up
Cabbage with parsley
Basil companied by onions and okra (yes…lady’s finger)
Red leaf Amaranth
What Happened Today at the Monastery?
A candid photo of Bodhinatha on the last Innersearch in India.
At home things are quiet. A few guests were hosted by Brahmacharini Shama, who tell about them in the photos and captions below.
At lunch the Pillaiyar Kulam gave their news. Shanmuganathaswami is slowly but surely getting a new distribution center set up in India which will have its own online shopping cart, price structure and shipping rates for books from Chennai to any point in India.
He says that someone recently requested 15 copies of What is Hinduism for a study group, and sales are doing well as more and more find out about this fantastic publication. Click here for more info if you don’t know about the book yet.
Sadhaka Jothinatha reported on the formation of a new Hindu Students Council at a university in Arkansas. They requested blessings from Bodhinatha. He sent them a small Ganesha, at their request, to perform puja to at their meetings.
Our mission team has arrived in Delhi. We caught them briefly on SKYPE last night during their 9-hour stopover in Taipei.
Daksha and Ghanshyam Merai are from Chicago, where they attend the Chinmaya Mission. They thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the Iraivan Temple given by Sadhaka Dandapani the previous day. They want to spend every morning during the remainder of their stay here in the Kadavul Temple.
“Its so blissful and peaceful here.” said Ghanshyam, “We don’t want to go home!”
They came to the Aadheenam nine years ago and met Gurudeva. He gave Daksha a big pile of books and literature for her classes with Hindu children. During this visit their son had some books signed by Bodhinatha on tour day.
Siri and Gita Kumar, originally from Bangalore, now live in Illinois. Gita’s mother lives in Palani in South India. Siri is very familiar with temple architecture. He conversed at length in Tamil with the Silpis while touring the Iraivan Temple.
Gita was touched by the peaceful spiritual energy permeating the property and wants to return here again.
Leonora Orr “Leah,” a local artist and temple devotee, regularly makes a decorative “floral offering” for the Gods and Devas near the Kodimaram. She saw such arrangements done in stone “bowls” in India and sponsored this one for Kadavul temple.
Samarth Kumar and Shveta Bansal, both from New Delhi, now residing outside Philadelphia, were given a special tour of the Iraivan Temple.
Shveta remarked that she is used to going to South Indian temples, but “what a blessing to actually see the hard work that goes into creating such a great temple of this kind.” Samarth was impressed to hear that this is the only all hand-carved white granite Chola-style Agamic Hindu Temple in the Western hemisphere.
Sun Two at the Aadheenam. Saravananathaswami shared news of the activities of the Ekadanta Kulam. One small innovation underway is to implement a simply, low-key reservations system for the weekly tours. With over 100 people coming for the 9 AM tour today, we are needing to implement some controls to manage the traffic and parking issues. More on this as it unfolds.
Palaniswami and Jivananda made if off fine from Honolulu this morning for Taipei. In an email they noted that their timing is good.
Today was a tour day at the Aadheenam. We took pictures with our close up camera.. Here is Karupaiah at work up near the ceiling.
Happy couple on tour.
Back to our Homa event…. Devotees bring lighted clay lamps when coming to worship Lord Pancha Ganapati.
These lamps are waved before the Deity and carefully placed on shelves close to the small shrine.
This week the Saivite Hindu Religion class youth have been learning about the Indus Valley civilization as part of their Hindu History lesson. They are looking at photos of the cities of Mohenjodaro and Lothal on the MacBook.
The pond near the Ganesha Mandapam has been filled up and grass has now planted. In future it will be a beautiful lawn…
Some new structures are being fixed to manage the high flow of devotees on Homa days on the lava steps…
The construction of the new bathroom has been completed.
The public can use them on the next Sunday Homa.
Today Bodhinatha gave the State of the Church Address which he will be giving each year at the New Year time based on the Hindu calendar. This sound file and transcript will be coming to you shortly.
Morning homa was performed. This is the first fire ceremony in the newly built altar. On the top you can see the shiney new copper insert.
Bodhinatha gives his talk and also an introduction to the new Shum Mamsani booklet.
Paramacharya Palaniswami and Yogi Jivanandanatha Depart on Mission
The other big news is the beginning of a month-long mission by Paramacharya Palaniswami and Yogi Jivanandanatha. The centerpiece of the journey is a ten-day stay in Mauritius. This is the first time Paramacharya has ever been to Mauritius. He very much looks forward to stepping foot on our beautiful center there.
Their first stop on the journey in New Delhi, where they will spend a few days, then on to Bangalore, then Chennai, next Mauritius, then back to Mumbai and Delhi, on to Shanghai and Hong Kong and back home around May 26th or so! More news as the journey unfolds. They will be “wired all the way” with high-speed internet connections
For now the first leg is the rugged, long haul of travel across the globe with a stop over in Taipei, arriving in the wee hours of the morning in New Delhi on the 21st.
Our two TAKA photographers have some fun…
Becky Jesse of Reno, mother of Chandran, is on Kauai for a few days to visit with Chandran and see the marvelous monastery that he has been telling her about during his stay as a resident guest on Task Force.
We are happy to say that the work on the new septic system in front of the Pillaiyar Kulam information office came to completion today. What a great job this team did!
This is Pradeep Chand, owner of Hawaii Pacific Trenchless . Originally from Fiji, he has been living on Kauai for several decades. We recommend his small company wholeheartedly.
Pradeep is hands-on, works shoulder-to-shoulder with his men and treats his customers well. We deeply appreciate his attention to the landscape. He left the work site in immaculate condition. Here he is spreading new lawn grass seed as an added touch. He also does earth works.
Juni, one of Pradeep’s right hand men.
Kulapati Vel Alahan from Colorado is here with his wife Valli for a spiritual retreat.
The Ganapati Kulam gave their news today. Paramacharya Palaniswami is busy preparing for his five-week trip to India (north and south), Mauritius, China and Hong Kong. He and Yogi Jivanandanatha have many futuristic goals for their morning-to-night schedule, and hundreds of people to meet. Planning has been in the works for six months now, and help has been amazing from key Sivathondars like Rajiv Malick in Delhi, Jiva Rajasankar in Bangalore, Tiru L. Nellaiappan and Sheela Venkatakrishnan in Chennai and Kulapatis Manon Mardeemootoo and Rajen Manick in Mauritius.
The kulam gave news during our lunchtime sharing of a new Shum booklet in progress under Bodhinatha’s guidance, the next edition of Hinduism Today coming together, Satyanatha’s music article coming together, a few web upgrades (including the completion today of the fullly illustrated online edition of “Lemurian Scrolls”), making of new slideshows and much more. It was Taskforcer Rajan who meticulously put the Lemurian Scrolls online this week. Thanks, Rajan! You can access this newest book online at:
