“The inner light is so beautiful. It is firm, like a plasma. It is sometimes fibrous and full of energy. And yet, it is quiet and full of colors. You begin to see color, and in that realm you can hear color at the same time that you see color. You can hear sound and see color all at the same time, and you have the faculty to turn hearing on and to turn hearing off, because you hear with an inner ear. This is, of course, very useful in daily life. When you listen to someone talking, you begin to know exactly what they are meaning because of your listening through your inner ear. When you look at someone, you know exactly where they are in consciousness, because you are looking at them with your inner eye.”

–Gurudeva

This morning Bodhinatha was on the radio as Gurudeva used to do. Pabitra Chowdhury in Brooklyn, New York and another man host an hour show each Sunday in the morning. And periodically they arrange to have Bodhinatha talk live on the air. To tune into the station you have to have a special chip in your radio, which is sold by Sony and we understand that 200,000 plus chips have been sold in the area. That means a lot of Hindus are tuning in….

End of Phase Notice
This is the last day of a six-day phase
This edition of TAKA will remain posted
Over our three day retreat until the evening of
Dasami Tithi, Sun One, Thursday, April 29th

Click for most recent TAKA page with an Iraivan Temple progress update.

It was a bright sunny end-of-phase tour day.

An interesting array of guests…

The morning sun cuts beautifully across the pillars, revealing the unique panel symbols.

The range of guests is from a very broad spectrum of society.

Iraivan looks wonderful today.

This Hindu couple chats with Sthapati.

Here is Rahul and Parul Mehra from New York on their first visit to Kauai Aadheenam. They said they had not expected to find such large grounds with a beautiful temple under construction and hope to be back again to see Iraivan complete.

For many of our guests, this may be their very first exposure to real live Hinduism.

Meanwhile this morning Sannyasin Arumugaswami and Sadhaka Adinatha met with other members of the Kalepa Koalition which is a citizens group of lease holders of the 6000 plus acres of land across from the temple. This morning’s group are those whose land is nearby the river and they have a strong interest in resurrecting an old road that crosses the river, from the Wailua side to the Kalepa side.

It’s only two minutes from the Aadheenam to the entrance and a 5-minute drive to get across.

This old river ford is still in excellent condition.

Our team today is trying to assess the cost of the necessary upgrade to make the road passable… this ford looks like it will not need much work.

The challenge is in the muddy sections.

Road sections like this will require a lot of rock to be placed down to get through.

Our cheerful guide of the Archeological Survey of India at the incredible Gangaikondacholapuram temple, currently under renovation. The sculptures are exquisite. Read about it at this excellent site on these Tamil Temples

These ladies have found good employment here, carrying the sand and mortar up to the top where artisans plaster in the cracks and broken areas of the temple which is about 900 years old.

Nearby cows.

Another temple, long ago abandoned…

Happy little boys… always delighted to be the cameraman’s focus.

Another day, another temple…

Sculptures at Mahabalipuram in the rocks of the area. This is the famed fresco called “Arjuna’s Penance.”

Refrigeration is rare here in South India. This has advantages in that one is assured of fresh produce, just picked yesterday.

The signage in India is often humorous in its unique English diction, and yet this one strikes us with a flip-side spiritual meaning. Yes, a pilgrimage to India’s holy places is most certainly a Joy Train!
