“He who illumined me by His Grace,
He is none other than myself, mother dear.”

“Siva’s will prevails; Siva’s Form pervades;
Sivam art all, mother dear.”

This morning in the temple we had a wonderful ceremony for Tuhina Nagappan. She received her Namakarana (name-giving ceremony), head-shaving and first-feeding samskaras all together on the same day! Here is Bodhinatha applying sandal paste to her head. For a child less just over 6 months old, she was very quiet, alert and showed interest in all the proceedings.

Her father Sivajnani reads the Namakarana pledge to raise the child as a Saivite Hindu according to the principles of the Sanatana Dharma.

Tuhina hears her name whispered into her right ear by her father. Paramacharya Ceyonswami helps guide the ceremony along.

Bodhinatha signs the certificates. One of the great achievements of Gurudeva was his work to resuscitate the place of the samskaras in Hindu life and to formalize them in such a way as to give them virtual legal status in religious society through proper documentation.

Writing the name in the rice. Tuhina seemed very anxious to get the job done.

Tada Astu! It is done!

Here is the whole Katir and Nagappan family together. A family of Hindus who span three generations and two nations.

Ariel Lewin and her brother bring lunch today for the monks. They wanted to fulfill the age old Saiva tradition of “feeding the sadhus.” Here they are presenting the food to Sadhaka Tyaganatha.

Three Indian couples came to visit today. The family on the right is a doctor with his wife a pharmacist from Los Angeles. In the middle is a young Hindu lady, sister of the pharmacist on the right, who just married the tall American man in the middle who is a high-school teacher. On the left there is another newly wed couple here for their honey-moon from New York. He is originally from Guyana and she is from UK. Her aunt told her that coming to the temple here on Kauai was a must!

The lady in this photo is Ranjan Patel, here on Kauai for a day after attending a medical meeting on the island of Maui. She learned about us via our websites and is Gujarati, though she actually grew up in Uganda, Africa. When the conflicts came her family moved back to Gujarat, then she eventually moved to Florida. She explained that because her family lived in Uganda, outside India, for so long, they were very religious and eager to learn more about and preserve their Hindu heritage, just like families in Guyana, Trinidad and elsewhere. She came here today very eager to take rudrakshas home with her, so she bought many large rudraksha malas as gifts for relatives.

After the morning homa the jyotisha/astrology board, is placed once again on top of the homa… the planets have not yet been restored to their places.
