Gurudeva in 2000 with Janahan Iyer moments after Janahan performed an elaborate a padapuja in Lancaster, California with 300 Sri Lankan Hindus present. Janahan also came to Kauai to conduct the Mahasamadhi rites for our beloved Gurudeva lat November.

LAST DAY OF THE PHASE:
This was a short, four-day phase and the full moon three-day retreat starts tomorrow. All the monks will be working the first day on Iraivan Temple projects, outreach, mailings, fund-raising, media design work. The two days “off” which means personal sadhanas, inner time in the temple, meditation by the river and also enjoying the tropical outdoors, working in the garden, taking care of honey bees… etc. Have a wonderful retreat. This edition of TAKA will remain on line until Wednesday evening.

Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami has completed his first day in Pittsburgh, where this morning he was the first speaker at a 2-day symposium on “Hinduism: Past, Present and Future.” His topic was “Hindu Megatrends.” His talk immediately provoked a hail of enthusiastic questions, which grew more energetic when everyone heard Bodhinatha’s direct, no-nonsense answers. So much so that the audience requested the symposium organizers to add an additional question and answer session, which they did this afternoon! Tomorrow, Sunday, he and Yoginathaswami will continue with programs at the symposium at the Sri Venkateswara temple there. Today Bodhinatha also visited the Hindu-Jain Temple where Gurudeva installed the Sivalingam years back. For details of today’s events see his travel page.

Title: Controlling Anger part 3

Category: Good Conduct

Duration: 16 minutes, 8 seconds

Date Given: May 28, 2002

Date Posted: June_22_2002

Given by: Bodhinatha

Cybertalk: In part three of his talk on anger, Bodhinatha begins by
referring to the Tirukural and its chapter called “Avoidance of Anger,”
which is right before the chapter on ahimsa, the cardinal virtue of
nonviolence. This placement shows that the control of anger is required to
be stable in ahimsa. Bodhinatha continues with remedies to anger, how to
raise consciousness. The first step is to admit that anger is a serious
problem for someone on the spiritual path. General remedies for an angry
episode are: visualizing the color light blue to raise consciousness;
putting a specific sum of money in a jar each time and periodically donating
the total to an orphanage; fasting the next meal to impress the instinctive
mind; turning to Lord Ganesha who raises our consciousness into the
muladhara chakra. Specific remedies are: putting a flower in front of a
photograph of someone with whom we are upset, such as abusive parents, for
31 days; performing the vasana daha tantra, writing down what is upsetting
us and realizing that it is our own karma coming through another person;
doing three kind actions that we were not already planning to do for someone
at whom we expressed anger.

Old island associates and “cyber-supporters” Thayne and Lynn Taylor came for a visit today. Thayne is a “self-made man” and was a “Hawaiian Information Technologies Pioneer,” when he started a small computer bulletin board service from his home on Kauai many years ago. In 1994, the web was in the first stages of explosion and Thayne stepped up to become Hawaii’s first web hosting service. At that time his high-minded community service impulses led him to give free space to schools and non-profit organizations, bringing the internet to life for our remote island community.

Hinduism Today, Himalayan Academy, Saiva Siddhanta Church were beneficiaries of his generous spirit when he gave us free web space for the “geo” domain name of www.hinduismtoday.kauai.hi.us.

Thayne later grew his enterprise to become “Hawaii On-Line,” in Honolulu and then moved on to the mainland for more career adventures. Now he is moving back to Kauai which is Lynn’s home.

We gave them our “walking tour” of the monastery San Marga lands and they ended up with the team at the publications building to brainstorm possiblities for our web space to move up to bigger servers in the future. We want to thank them for their gift years ago. While they consider it a small thing, it was a strategic moment for us in the development of our global services. You would not be reading this today but not for their help years ago!

A diverse group today with some from Canada, Israel and some from Kenya. They had friends on Kauai who told them about the monastery and all came as a group today.

Also visiting were the Dayananda Pai and Krishnanand Kini families, from Pennsylvania and Bangalore, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Krishnanand (on the right) live in Bangalore city only a few kilometers from our Iraivan Temple stone carving site.

They all heard about us through a friend in Houston, Texas who had visited here. Despite our morning full of sun and showers, they really enjoyed witnessing the stone jointing work here, and collecting fresh rudraksha seeds.

We are at the high point of the rudraksha season with many trees dropping 100’s of their fruits… small “blue marbles.” Visitors who have heard of the famed bead called “Rudraksha” are fascinated to see them in real life.

Not pictured here, we met a few very young children leaving from the tour today with their hands full of “blue berries!”

It was an auspicious day on Thursday as Choladeva and his mother Hema both receive their Namakarana Samskara at the Concord Palaniswami Sivan temple, making a formal entrance into Hinduism.

Virginia (mother) Gonzales and Daniel (son) are now Hema and Choladeva Chandranatha. During the ceremony the name of the young person is whispered into the right ear. Here, Hema whispered “Choladeva” into her son’s ear. Kulamata Asha Alahan sends this report:

” It was a wonderful event at the Temple, the priest chanting, the Homa burning, all three worlds coming together. All who attended were filled and thrilled.”

We blessed them with a reception at the Palani’s home. Here they are sitting after flowers petals were
thrown on their heads. We all enjoyed hearing testimony from the group about each of their Namakarana’s ceremonies.”

We welcome them both into our worldwide family of Saivite Hindus! Jai Hema and Choladeva Chandranathan! Choladeva has aspirations for monastic life and will be coming to learn and serve in the monastery on “task force” for six months starting in July.

Sishya and students: watch your Academy or Church email newsletter for the announcement and their email address to send them congratulations.

See our latest online addition “How To Become A Hindu,” for information one what they went through…
