What Happened Today at the Monastery?

Today was Sun Three of this phase and our Pillaiyar Kulam shared news on their Sivathondu. Shanmuganathaswami said that our web store now has virtually everything we have in inventory available on the web.

Sadhaka Jothinatha gave news of event promotions where sevaks in the field have booths at various fairs and melas. We now have a very broad range of literature and people passing through are very interested. We take their name and address and send a small packet of free literature later and also give the “Internet Flyer” which has the web addresses for our online resources.

It is also Ashram Sadhana day for this month… everyone is cleaning and repairing. In the afternoon we had two teams working on the temple and the kitchen. In the morning there was a special project in the Publications building…

We installed a “Wall of Covers” of Hinduism Today, stretching back in time to the first New Saivite World. Gurudeva founded it on January 5, 1979 and the first issue came off the press in February, printed by the monks on a small press in what is now our cafeteria! It was black and white, and the photos were so bad (really) that one could sometimes only tell what was in them by reading the captions! But it did make us good caption writers, so there is a blessing in everything.

Then in 1985 Gurudeva changed the name to Hinduism Today, and we began printing with a single color. It was a big moment, and in that same year we got our first Macs and began learning that you can do type and graphics without all the chemicals, light tables and darkrooms. That was a discovery.

We later went to full color, but in the large tabloid style of a newspaper still, and printed that style for another eleven years. By then the printing was not done on Kauai, but by a printer in America, sometimes called the Really Big Island.

And in December of 1996 Hinduism Today, which had by then become a major journalistic force within HInduism, transformed itself into a full color magazine.

The Wall of Covers has every magazine cover we have printed since then, 64 of them.

Twenty-six years of publication. And still going strong! Now every visitor will be able, at a glance, to see this history.

Jai to our founder, Gurudeva, for his vision, his encouragement, his practical wisdom and love in taking the team through all those years of growth and change into maturity.
