“Reading and analyzing dreams from the shumif (pronounced “shoom-eef”) perspective, of awareness flowing through the mind–the inner mind being stationary, and awareness being a mercury-like substance that is aware in various states–will keep the aspirant emotionally and intellectually detached from areas of consciousness, or mind, which he becomes conscious in as he travels here, there and everywhere, as he does through the day. We therefore know that we need not be emotionally or mentally attached within our dreams to everything that happens. In the very same way we are not mentally and emotionally attached to even two-thirds of what we see and experience in our waking state on television or when we are walking about in public. Therefore, the shumif perspective, once it is well set within the subconscious, aids in understanding dream consciousness juxtaposed to waking consciousness and seeing them as one and the same. Pure awareness, nif, never sleeps. This mercury, mirror-like substance travels here and there, guided by the will of the perceiver. It is the venerable eye of the purusha. It is constantly aware, from the moment of the creation of the soul; and at the soul’s final merger into Siva it experiences super, super, super, superconscious totality. Most people who meditate do not enter the astral plane during sleep. When they sleep at night, they go deeper within than the astral, into superconsciousness, in the beautiful body of the soul. There they communicate with other people who are also in their body of the soul. “

–Gurudeva

Venkatraman and Prema Iyer are here on a 3-day pilgrimage from Adelaide, South Australia. They were introduced to Gurudeva and Iraivan Temple by a
friend who had visited here a few years ago and ever since then they have hoped to visit. They were also
most fortunate to have met with Bodhinatha today as he will be leaving for his trip to the mainland tomorrow.

Bodhinatha’s next travel is to Atlanta, Georgia, and Bethesda, Maryland. Please visit his travel page for more information.

They toured the grounds and Iraivan Temple and said they were amazed to see such a beautiful sanctuary dedicated to Lord Siva in Hawaii.

Current Overview

Here is Jon Letman, Kauai resident who works at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens and is also a freelance journalist. You recently read his article on Iraivan and the monastery that was printed in the Zento Magazine.

Jon spent 9 years in Japan and also wrote an article on Iraivan for a Japanese travel magazine

Today Jon is on site with a different focus in mind: the men who are behind the work. Lots of posed shots to go to press later.

He came with a list of about 19 questions for the silpis which Yogi Mahadevan translated for him. Stapathi knows enough English to respond….

This is an article for our local newspaper, The Garden Island.

Jon takes notes in the building talents, skills and traditions behind the temple

Sthapati demonstrates some of the simple yet amazingly accurate methods by which he is able to set up lines for positioning and cutting the stones with such precision that even modern day builders are awed.

“How can he do all this without a transit!?”

Marking stones for adjustments…

“Smile for the camera….”

Jon asks about some of the personal side of the life of the silpis: “What do you find is your greatest challenge in coming to live here on Kauai?”

Sthapati explains: “Well, of course the toughest thing is being away from our families. But, we are so excited about this project and enthused by the work, we really don’t think about it that much.”

Jon: “What do you do on your days off?”

Silpis: “We take it easy and once a month go on an outing to some place on Kauai.”

Jon: “What place do you like the best?”

Silpis: “Waimea Canyon and the beach at Hanapepe (Salt Pond).”

Setting up a shot for the camera…

One is not likely to ever really see all the silpis all lined up like this. But it will look cool on the front page! 😉

A photo of the master builder….

And a photo of Gurudeva.

Note the flowers that were given by someone we don’t even know who they are…

Now for some close-ups of detail work.

The cross-lighting of mid-morning is perfect.

We will run his article here after it is published.

A good shot of the roof.

This is Chandra Shekharan from the Ukraine. He is translating Living with Siva now into Russian. He was fortunate to be blessed by Gurudeva and receive his Namakarana directly from Gurudeva at St. Petersburg, Russia. Here he is with his wife, Ludmila.

You may be far away on land, Chandra, but we are close to you on the inside and are with you at night with Gurudeva!

Cybertalk: Bodhinatha gives more suggestions on teaching Hinduism to your children. Parents should use a systematic approach to teaching their children Hinduism as they grow up. Teach them about the greatness of Hinduism. Instill in children a pride for Hinduism based on its wise precepts for living. This is evidenced by the fact that many aspects of Hinduism have been taken up by others around the world, such as vegetarianism, reverence toward the environment, nonviolence, tolerance, the whole world is a family, karma, reincarnation, yoga, meditation and seeking personal experience of Divinity.
