Today was our monthly Ashram Sadhana Day when we all do cleaning. Each monk takes care first of his own area which is usually his daily cleaning duty. For example if he is assigned to take care of a bathroom or the laundry area, then on this day he has extra time to scrub the floors and make everything extra shiny. Then we move on to special areas of our kulam, clearing out a store room, and restoring new order or re-organizing our office and vacuuming behind all the counters etc. We may also undertake a special upgrade project. In this case one team of monks has been, every Ashram Sadhana day, for several months, painting all the walkways, and paths around the temple. We also painted the front wall of the Pihanakalani trail, which is the long walk along the edge of the valley down to the Wailua River.

Two weeks ago the Siddhidata Kulam has hired Dennis Wong to grade the road going down to Rishi Valley and over to the Iraivan temple site. This road just happens to be the water shed for a vast acreage to the Northeast and has been a bit troublesome with mud and gutters forming after heavy rains. Our goal was to grade the road, add swales to both sides to channel the water off the road and then cover it with gravel. Lord Ganesha was in control of the timing because it was graded two weeks ago and then it started to rain and we couldn’t put the gravel on, then, three days ago the weather cleared and the road dried up. Then, just today everything came together nicely and we were able to bring in the road fill.. In a day or so Dennis will bring in his heavy roller to smooth out this path.

Iraivan Wonders

During the last retreat, one of the Iraivan day projects was to paint the temple foundationi with red and white stripes.

The silpis were delighted and Shanmuga Sthapati said: “It’s wonderful, just like in India!”

The push is on by the silpis to complete the 11th course by Guru Purnima which is now less than a month away.

This piece is on its side with the bottom facing us, the ornament you see will project outward. From the first course of the temple, the stones gradually moved inward. Now at the 11th course the stones will move outward. If that is not clear, well…. maybe will put a drawing up next phase so you can see what we mean. The bottom of this stone has been chipped down and the stone is ready for placement.

All hands are on hand to make the move to drop the stone over to its place.

It actually a very controlled and gentle move. The ornamentation is very delicate. One wrong move and a piece will be broken off.

Easy! Down he goes….

Now, using metal bars, the stone is levered into final position. It’s horizontal and vertical alignment will be very carefully checked using levels and plub lines. The fit with the adjacent stones to the side and bottom will be analyzed.Shanmuga Sthapati will make the final call. If it’s not just right they will roll it back and work on it some more. When everyone is satisfied, a thin layer of mortar will be laid into the space and the stone lifted, shims removed and dropped into position, permanently, for the next 1,000 years or more.

It’s is truly amazing to see them fit all these stone with such perfection. Please! Give generously to the Iraivan temple project. Income has been a bit slow recently and we are begging for special help, otherwise we may eventually have to send the silpis back to India, while we raise more funds. But we don’t want the momentum to slow down. Please make a monthly pledge or sponsor a pillar today. Go to our donations site now. Thank you.
