“The Wise who have known the Self, in whose heart is enthroned the Lord, will not be deluded by the joys and sorrows of the earth, but will live benignly in the world as the drops of water floating on the lotus blooms.”

Bodhinatha meets with guests in the Guru Peedam just as Gurudeva had done through the years. He has a special gift for putting the wisdom of the Parampara into a very practical, implementable teaching.

Here we meet relatives of one of our local church members, Durvasa Alahan. His father Mr. Art Pontius and his brother Earnest Pontius came to Hawaii to visit and asked to come see the monastery. They are accompanied by Durvasa’s sister in law, Sheila and Faye, a friend of the family. Durvasa’s wife Isani and daughter Priya brought them to the publications building for a tour.

We are going back in time to last phase when a wonderful gift was received by the monastery. Bramacharini Shama Kumaran brought four turtles to live in our Chola garden ponds.

Remarkably these turtles she tells us were extremely personable and intelligent. They knew her by name and she would take them out of their tank and walk them on the lawn. One of them would crawl up on her feet if someone came near who the turtle did not know.

Shanmuganathaswami and visitor Vidyanand receive the gift. Turtles are highly auspicious creators. Gurudeva loved to see the turtles in the sea and would meditate on them. Goddess Laxshmi, the Goddess of wealth rides on a turtle. We received three large females and one smaller male turtle.

Oh my! new territory… we better head for the water right away.

The turtles disappeared under the water hyacinth. The next day we worried because we couldn’t see them. One of the monks sat in a chair and waited and waited and waited. Finally one of the them surfaced, but on seeing a strange person she took a deep breath and disappeared under the bamboo leaves at the bottom. The monks sat and waited and waited and waited… 30 minutes later the turtle surfaced for another breath! No wonder we don’t see them often… they stay underwater most of the time. We hope they will get used to their new habitat over time and be a little less apprehensive about coming out to sun themselves.

Later Vidyanand met with Bodhinatha. He discovered the Aadheenam after finding Dancing with Siva in a Border’s Bookstore and was so impressed with the book he felt he had to come visit. He is a doctor and is also studying Ayurveda and alternative medicine. He just happened to be in Hawaii for one month doing his “practical.”

A visit with the silpis on San Marga.
