Gurudeva presents the “Drug Free Kauai” CD that he had his monks prepare for distribution to the community as one of the Aadheenam’s ongoing contributions to the Kauai community.

Today we bring you photos from Bodhinatha’s stay in Edmonton, with captions sent by Paramacharya Ceyonswami.

Shortly after Bodhinatha’s arrival in Edmonton, Alberta, he was taken to the gurukkulam of Swami Brahmanistananda Saraswati. The swami, who is from Andra Pradesh, has been coming to Canada for the last 10 years and recently became a permanent resident. Swami is in the same lineage as Swami Chinmayananda and focuses on teaching the Upanishads and chanting sanskrit.

TRAVEL NEWS! Bodhinatha is currently visiting Edmonton and Vancouver, Canada.
Next travel is July 3-4 in Cincinnati, Ohio. See travel page for more information.

A small group of his sincere students gathered to have and question and answer session with Bodhinatha.

The devotees were quite impressed by the clarity and practicality of Bodhinatha’s answers to their sincere questions, such as, “What is the first step in God Realization for a householder?” and, “What is the importance of worship and devotion on the path to Realization?”

The first evening of the 10-day annual festival at the Maha Ganapati Temple of Edmonton.

Most all of the devotees are immigrants from Sri Lanka and have connections to our parampara, lineage of gurus.

The parade deity is coming out of the temple after 3 hours of homa, abhishekam and pujas to all the shrines. Walking into the temple takes you right back to Sri Lanka.

You tend to forget this temple is not in a tropical climate like Alaveddy until you step out doors and the chill of the evening dry Canada air hits your face.

But it doesn’t deter the palanquin carriers from removing their shirts.

Subramania Kurukkal performing arati here has been doing pujas at this location since 1987, though the Kumbhabhisekam was just 4 years ago. Gurudeva helped his family move to Canada after the war started in Sri Lanka.

Subramania Gurukkal was Paramacharya Ceyonswami’s first puja teacher in 1983 while he was living at the Alaveddy Ashram for 3 months.

The musicians were flown in from Toronto, on the East side of Canada.

Bodhinatha gave a well-received talk on how to keep the youth interested and involved in their religion and temple.

After the pujas and talk, the temple committee presented their first minted silver temple coin to Bodhinatha.

The procession continues… more travel notes from Ceyonswami:

“Temperature is below 60 degrees Fahrenheit and everyone is walking barefoot around the temple. “

These photos were taken between 9:30 and 10pm here! It didn’t get dark ’til after 11pm.

We meet with some devotees at the hotel this morning, then off for Vancouver. Had a meeting with a seniors group last night…10 grandmas, 3 of whom came to Kauai Jayanti 2001 and received Gurudeva’s blessings from the car.

It’s the dream of the other elder Ammas who haven’t been here to come also. They are planning to come with a larger group of grandma’s from Toronto, connected to the Sivathondan Nilayam, probably next spring.

It really shows how much the Aadheenam and Iraivan are a strength and inspiration out here.

Back at the Aadheenam… today was Sun One and opened with blazing, bright homa. Paramacharya Palaniswami offers the grains and written prayers to the fire.

Bodhinatha’s seat has his wooden sandals, garlanded, taking his place at the homa until he returns in three days. The vibration of the temple builds during the rite and carries one off into deep meditation with ease.
