From Living with Siva:

No Sanction For Terrorism

In every country there is the army, the navy, air force, police, the protectors of the country, the collective force of citizens that keep a country a country. This is dharma. In protection of family and nation, in armies and police forces which give security, it is indeed dharmic for kshatriyas to do their lawful duty, to use necessary force, even lethal force. But for this collective force of protectors, of peacemakers, of peacekeepers–which includes the law courts and the central administrative authorities who oversee the courts, the armies, the navies, the air force–would the priests be able to function? Would the businessmen be able to acquire and sell their goods? Would the farmers be able to plant their crops and harvest them? Could the children play fearlessly in the streets and countryside? No. The answer is obvious.

Kulapati Vel Alahan and Kulamata Valli. Another veteran couple of Innersearchers, they have been a strong support for Gurudeva’s work since they met him in 1967! We want to thank Vel and Valli for all their dedication and backup all through the years. They were instrumental in getting a Hindu temple started in Denver, Colorado where, at Gurudeva’s request, Vel served as the pujari. Vel and Valli drove many miles from their home in Avon every month, through storms, snow and cold winters to perform the pujas to Lord Ganesha. Now the temple is thriving with a priest from India and a strong congregation.

Bodhinatha’s next journey is brief, on the weekend of April 3-4 in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California. He will visit with Saiva Siddhanta Church members and Himalayan Academy Students.

It’s a quiet rainy day at the Aadheenam. Cool, windy and wet… The silpis are all wearing their wool caps.

Miss Devika Ajaya on her first trip to India. An accomplished dancer, she received permission to dance in Chidambaram which she did on the Innersearch, fulfilling a life-long dream she had. Always in a good spirit she was a great addition to our Innersearch family.

From the collections of different Innersearchers, today is “Gopuram Day” on TAKA. Who can resist being moved by these great towers that lift the eye, the mind, the heart and the spirit toward the higher inner worlds with their outer majesty.

We are not exactly sure where we are… this may be in Madurai, or possibly Chidambaram.

Madurai Meenakshi temple gopuram

Deep in the inner prakarams (halls) .

Madurai Meenakshi… the temple covers and entire city block.

Here we witness the challenges posed by time and nature to these old structures. As the mortar between stones dries and is washed away over the centuries, wind and bird droppings deposit seeds in the crevices between the stones. Plants begin to grow and stones begin to be dislodged.

Some of these great temples were covered in jungle only a few decades ago.

Here we see one of the old Chola vimanams that has been “rescued” by the Archeological Survey of India. (ASI)

The ASI has done a really great job. All the plant matter is has been removed from the crevices and new mortar plastered over the stones as part of the restoration process.

Well, this is not exactly a gopuram… a view of the lands below Palani Hills from the temple on top.
