Selfless Service and Penance

An e-devotee asks if it is better to do a personal penance or to do some kind of selfless service to the community. Gurudeva explains the difference between the two and adds that penance frees the person to perform more selfless service, "because he is not burdened by guilt." (This phrase, by the way, is the end of the talk, though it may sound as if Gurudeva is going to say something more.)

Karma is the law of cause and effect, action and reaction governing maya. Anava is the individuating veil of duality, source of ignorance and finitude. Maya is the classroom, karma the teacher, and anava the student's ignorance.
