The Sri Lankan Saivite Temples of London

The Hinduism Today October/November/December, 2015 feature story from London focuses on the amazing tale of the Sri Lankan Saivite Hindu community which has built over 20 Saivite temples in London. From the very first Hindu temple in Europe consecrated in 1981, to today's widespread temple activities that adhere to the ancient Saiva Agama texts, London's Sri Lankans have succeeded in transplanting the ancient and authentic Hindu temple culture from their homeland to this small island in the northern Atlantic. Outside the ancient lands of India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, today London is the biggest bastion of Saivite Hinduism in the western world.

Life is meant to be lived joyously. There is in much of the world the belief that life is a burden, a feeling of penitence, that it is good to suffer, good for the soul. In fact, spiritual life is not that way at all.
